Investing in a Better World
We make personal investments in many ways and for many reasons. We invest time in our children. We invest in our own education. Sometimes we help people that we may not know, because we have the ability to meet a need we become aware of. I want to tell you about such a need and address a financial investment that isn’t going to boost your IRA or 401k.
Kenya Kids Can is efficient and effective at feeding children with a free school lunch and providing computer training in remote, impoverished areas of Kenya. The folks who run this ministry essentially volunteer to do this on the side and have very lean administrative expenses by separately raising their own mission support through Africa Inland Missions (AIM – also worthwhile) for their “full-time” work at Rift Valley Academy. Anyway, AIM keeps 5% for administrative costs and 95% of financial contributions go directly to the lunch or computer training programs. It is a beautiful combination of
- feeding to meet the immediate need, and
- training to improve the long-term conditions
by folks who do it to the Glory of God, not themselves.
Living the Gospel
Kenya Kids Can lives out the gospel message. While it is an outstanding program, and they are continuing to act in faith, they also have seen the global economic downtown and declining dollar negatively impact their budget at a time when need (or opportunity) has expanded. That is why I want to help get the word out. This is a great time to consider a one-time gift, or setting up a recurring monthly donation like my family chose to do after meeting these fine folks last year. Mission and Vision
In a nutshell, their mission is to enhance the education of Kenyan students by providing meals and offering computer training to impoverished schools. Their vision is to see the next generation of leaders grow physically strong, spiritually generous, technically knowledgeable and ready to change the world.
Founders & The Team
Steve and Nancy Peifer began Kenya Kids Can and run the organization as part of their ministry with Africa Inland Mission (AIM) in Kijabe, Kenya. They have a compelling story of how their family (of six now) moved to Kenya, and have seen God move by relying on faith. They give Him the glory for compelling hearts worldwide to support the program. A team of Kenyan friends help transport food, teach computers, build centers and support the sustainability and accountability of the program.
First Things First: The Food Program
Many of Kenya’s students go to school hungry. To help kids stay in school, their team feeds up to 18,300 students at 34 schools each school day. Drop-out rates have plummeted to less than 1%.
Building a Future: The Computer Centers
They establish computer centers in remote areas of Kenya. Each center is housed in a recycled steel shipping crate and fueled by solar panels. Students are taught by Kenyan teachers, who are dedicated solely to computer instruction.
